When is the next international break? 2026/27 dates

The current men’s international break ends on 6 October 2026. Find the next windows, Premier League return date and why the autumn calendar changed.

Published · Updated

As of 3 October 2026, the men's international break is already underway. It runs from 21 September to 6 October, and Premier League football returns on 10 October. The next international window is 9–17 November 2026. These are different dates: the end of national-team duty is not automatically the day your club plays again.

International break dates for the 2026/27 season

The Premier League's official calendar lists these in-season windows:

Men's international window Position on 3 October 2026
21 September–6 October 2026 Current break
9–17 November 2026 Next break
22–30 March 2027 Later in the season

This table covers the men's windows interrupting the Premier League season, rather than every international competition or the women's calendar.

Why is the autumn break longer this year?

From 2026, the separate September and October men's windows are combined. FIFA approved a 16-day autumn window with room for four matches, alongside nine-day, two-match windows in March, June and November.

That changes the rhythm of the club season: one longer autumn interruption replaces two shorter ones. It also changes what a familiar phrase such as “the October break” refers to. In this season, it is the latter part of a window that began in September, not another break still waiting to start.

The window is the available period for national-team football; it is not a promise that every country plays on every listed date. For a particular team, the competition's fixture list supplies the actual matches.

When does the Premier League return?

Matchweek 6 begins on 10 October, after Matchweek 5 ended on 20 September. That restart is confirmed in the Premier League's explanation.

A league's restart date tells you when its round begins, not the kick-off of every club's next match. If you are planning to follow one team, find its own fixture and check the date and time displayed. Distinguish a season calendar, which identifies windows, from a match schedule, which identifies opponents and kick-offs.

What football is being played during the break?

National teams take centre stage. In Europe, the current window includes the UEFA Nations League. UEFA's 2026/27 schedule places Matchday 3 between 30 September and 3 October, with Matchday 4 on 4–6 October. Its November rounds run on 12–14 and 15–17 November.

Notice the distinction in November: the international window starts on the ninth, while those Nations League fixtures start on the twelfth. A window includes more than the days on which those particular matches are scheduled.

International football is not synonymous with friendlies. The Nations League is a competition with group standings and sporting consequences. When looking for a match, check the tournament as well as the country names; that tells you what the result counts towards.

Real matches in the current window

These examples come from UEFA's official 2026/27 fixtures and results, checked on 3 October 2026. Completed results and scheduled fixtures are separated explicitly:

Date Nations League match Status at this check
2 October 2026 France 1–1 Italy Played; result listed by UEFA
4 October 2026 Portugal vs Norway Scheduled; no result yet
6 October 2026 England vs Czechia Scheduled; no result yet

France's draw is already a result; the Portugal and England entries are still fixtures. England's match falls on the window's final day. Check UEFA for kick-off details and subsequent results; this is a dated snapshot, not a live scoreboard.

Does all club football stop?

No. An international break is not a universal shutdown of football. The Premier League pauses for these windows, but its timetable should not be applied to every domestic competition. A blank Premier League weekend does not prove that another league has no fixtures.
